Education Programs
The Portage SWCD offers educational services to teachers, students and community groups. Our staff is committed to providing quality conservation programming on a wide range of topics. Presenations can be tailored to meet the needs of your group.
Please contact Jennifer, x111 to schedule a program. Schedule at least 2 weeks in advance - the calendar fills up quickly! Classroom Programs All student programs use hands-on learning and can be adapted to your classroom needs. Most of the SWCD programs have been correlated to the new Ohio science standards. Examples of programs include: Lending Library The Portage SWCD has a wealth of conservation-related videos and materials available for educators' use. Teachers may also borrow the Enviroscape Model, Groundwater Model and Streamulator to use in the classroom (all come with user manuals). 5th Grade Conservation Poster Contest This is an annual contest that is conducted with the help of the Portage County Garden Clubs and is open to all fifth grade students. Schools are mailed information in late fall. The Portage SWCD provides poster board, participation certificates and a free tree seedling to each student. The SWCD also sponsors cash awards for the top five county winners. The county 1st place poster receives an engraved plaque. High School Envirothon This outdoor team competition is held on a regional level each spring. Teams of 5 from all across Northeast Ohio are tested on their knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues. In addition, the Envirothon encourages cooperative decision-making and team building. It is designed to stimulate, reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources. The Portage SWCD sponsors local teams and provides team T-shirts. The top-scoring Portage County Team will receive the traveling Envirothon trophy to display in their school for the year. Regional winners are eligible to move on to the state and national Envirothon competitions. Visit the National Canon Envirothon at www.envirothon.org to learn more. |
