Water for Wildlife

Water is critical for all life. There are several ways homeowners can increase the amount of water available for wildlife in their landscape.  Most wildlife prefers water sources that mimic nature.  If you are fortunate enough to have ponds, streams, vernal pools or seasonally wet areas on your property,  enhancing these areas with native vegetation to increase cover and forage will make these areas more attractive to wildlife.  If you do not have a lot of natural water sources in your landscape, adding supplemental water sources might be beneficial.  Keep in mind that you should only provide water sources, feeders, and nest boxes that you are able to manage well. Frequent water changes and cleaning of water basins, feeders and nest boxes is necessary for keeping them safe for wildlife.
